This course introduces the basic techniques, styles, and backgrounds of ballet, modern, and jazz dance, as well as other dance forms, such as hip hop, tap, international (e.g., African and Middle Eastern), and social dance. It is designed for dancers of any experience level. The course focuses on developing coordination, flexibility, strength, and postural alignment. Movement studies and improvisations encourage student individuality. DNCE 1 (or DNCE 1A and 1B) may be taken once for a maximum of 2 units.

Typical Outside-of-Class Assignments
Assigned readings from the textbook, handouts, periodicals, other printed materials, and the Internet that reinforce class concepts.
Critique of dance performance(s): live, television, or video. Journal of individual objectives and performance evaluations. Descriptions of movement sequences and corrections. Essay on genres presented.
Rehearsal of each day's movement vocabulary and movement combinations. Creative movement problems. Development of short movement combinations. Preparation for performance of movement sequences. Viewing of videos, television programs, and/or movies.
Preparation of periodic participation in class discussion as well as student-instructor questions and response throughout the semester.
Method of Evaluation
  1. Instructors evaluation of appropriate standards of language, and discipline demostrating the fundamentals of each dance form for a beginning dance class through in class performance. 
  2. Written assignments to identify and define basic dance vocabulary and technique skills that are germane to ballet, jazz, modern and other dance forms. 
  3. Instructors evaluation of in-class demostrations of basic barre and center floor patterns that include locomotor movements, directional changes, and spacial adjustments. 
  4. Written journals that compare and contrast ballet, jazz, modern and other dance forms showing the students experience within each genre. 
  5. Written evaluation and analyzation of the mechanics and artistry of dance concerts within a dance concert critique.
Student Learning Outcomes
Identify and evaluate areas needing personal improvement in terms of body position, alignment, technique, and movement combinations, and apply instructor feedback to improve own performance.

  • Identify, define and perform basic positions, movements and movement combinations in various dance forms.
  • Demonstrate improved strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, balance, movement memory, and rhythm.

  • Compare and contrast the dance forms with regard to structure, technique, interpretive style, movement vocabulary, and history.
  • Critique a dance performance using the techniques of appraisal, academic criticism, and evaluation of skills appropriate to specific dance forms.
